I'll be using this for all impressions that are not directly tied to games themself. hardware, OS, accessories etc.
I dont actually have the PS4 yet, but I do have it all paid for and am going to pick it up in a few hours, but I do already have a dualshock 4, PS Camera, as well as knack, and AC4: Black Flag.
1st off is the camera. It is rather nice looking, comes with a simple yet efficient stand that works for mounting it on top of the TV or on a flat surface. it is designed to be versatile enough to work with lots of different set ups. but I am not sure how well it will work with mine. I have my tv mounted high up on the wall, angled down, and I dont think it is aimed at the right part of my room where my bed is which is where I will be playing from. and my tv is to thick for the mount to go around and grip it properly like it would on a thin tv, plus the back side is curved which doesnt help either. but it is also too thin for the mount to work like it is supposed to on thicker TVs. The cord itself was a slight concern I had as my TV is much higher up than where the PS4 will be sitting, and it is not a USB plug in on the end. it is something else unique. so If it was too short I would have no way to extend it. however the cable is plenty long. so no issue there.
Dualshock 4 is a super comfortable controller. like I could just hold it and forget I was holding it. touchpad is in a very easily reachable position. Causes no strain reaching/swiping it. Triggers are really nice comfortable. D Pad is great as youd expect. and the most import thing for me is the buttons (X, O, Triangle, Square) are snappy. they have a nice pop to them. no more pressure senstive buttons. they are on and off, not a gradual depress. This is the reason I bought so many games on the 360. especially action games. and why I always bought AC games on the 360 even though there was always exclusive content for PS3 versions.
The Game cases are the same dimensions. and they have the same sort of clips holding the manual in, as well as the discs themselves, but they are now translucent blue (like blue ray cases) but the biggest difference (visually) is that the top half inch of the case that the cover art didnt cover now it does. which also has the PS4 and logo at the top of the case much bigger and more noticeable. Also the games have a super strong new game smell. Like super strong. I usually never notice the new game smell. but I opened these up, didnt even have the case near my face, and I was overwhelmed by how strong it was.
Dont expect actual PS4 impressions within the next 24 hours or so. You'll get them when I go to take a break from the system, and feel like typing them up.
also I would like to ask that since I am going to the trouble of writing up these impressions, and that (based on several posts) you guys want to read them, that you guys give me the respect of actually spelling my name correctly (that is to say all lower case) if you feel the need to differentiate my name from the common word nobody then put "@" right before it. This will also ensure that I see your post, and will likely respond to it.

You know how I know I'm a nerd? I am looking forward to someone else getting a PS4 so I can live vicariously through them. I have said this in many other posts, but nobody I look forward to hearing all you have to say about your new system, games, etc.

Got my ps4. played a bit with it, but I cant connect to PSN, and apparently wont be able to for another 45 minutes when it launches on the west coast. (and I thought living in a time zone farther east would have its benefits.)
UI is super damn snappy though. and I can set up my internet connection without quitting from the game. the UI itself is an odd combination of new and familiar. if you go up to the top of the page you have somethign very XMB like. where you just go left and right over various categories, Store/notifications (the home screen basically)/friends/messages/party/profile/trophies/settings/power click one of those and it loads the page below it.
btw it was so snappy I was playing AC and my room mate was watching me, and I was running, then hit ps button bring up trophies, and tasp back to game, run for a bit tap go back to trophies, and back to game. I mean holy f*** is it fast. plus there is a slight animation as the menu fades in or out over the game, so it feels like an even smoother transition then it is. that split second it takes to load the menu instead of stuttering on the ps3 feels like just a nice clean smooth transition

I have my console preordered but it's two weeks until it launches in the rest of the world. Even so it's been fun watching all the demos and coverage so far, particularly the new UI. Decided on Killzone as my launch game, will also be upgrading COD: Ghosts to the PS4 version and downloading the two free PS+ games, can't wait for Resogun !.
BTW the video below is a pretty nice demo of the UI if you haven't seen it yet.

Room mate is messing with PS4 menu atm.
things that are awesome 1) being able to access the store and download stuff without quitting a game. 2) being able to set up and test internet connection (and any other many of things) without quitting the game. 3) being able to see the rarity of trophies. so you can see what % of people have what trophies. works to see even all ps3/vita ones as well. 4) name requests (you can send a name request to someone,a nd fi they accept you both will see each others real names) 4) using the light on the controller to be able to read the codes to redeem them in the dark. 5) dual sign ins (also each person has their own version of the menu, and only they can navigate it. the other person needs to hit the ps button on his controller and it switches to his version, and just as fast as switching 6) easy menu navigation using voice commands 7) list of notifications. (you can see a list of everything that popped up on the side of the screen, messages, friend requests, trophies, errors etc. and all have links 8) oddly number 8 has to do with 8. there are 8 different types of notifications and you can choose which ones display.
Things that are odd 1) it downloads all games in the download list at the same time
things that arent so great 1) no way to really control what games in download list are downloading 2) limited voice command options (cant eject disc, or switch to different tabs in the menu) 3) not all games use the play while you download feature. warframe is a 4 gig download and has to finish before you can launch it, ten once you do it has to download a decent sized update from within the game itself.
I will likely do more of these in the future as it is a quick easy way to convey a lot of information.
Also I do have misc stuff to say about various games stuff that isnt worth making their own topics (like just how amazing and better looking the ps4 version of flower is) but I dont feel like the board is properly set up for that sort of discussion, where would you guys like that posted? just here in this topic? I was trying to keep this purely non gaming stuff.

Nice to hear your intial impressions. I really like the list of notifications feature - I didn't know that was in there. As far as the "aren't so great" things are concerned, they all seem like things that can patched in The Play as you download feature is developer driving and depends on how the game is coded.

yea, pretty much all my issues with it can be patched out.
also I was playing AC earlier today for an extended gaming session had to really take a piss but didnt want to stop gaming (my new place doesnt have a bathroom within view of the tv) so I fired up my vita, did remote play. it told me what controls were different (back touch is l1/r1 and bottom corners of touch screen are L3/R3. and then I could play it just fine, and then I took it and played it in the other room while I took care of busineess, then I layed back down on my bed and continued playing from my vita but was watching the TV instead of the vita screen. I did eventually end up switching back though since the dualshock is much more comfortable.
also on a side note to that. AC4 lets you use the 2nd screen function with treasure maps. treasure maps have a crude map of an island and where the treasure is. and when you use the vita for 2nd screen the treasure map is on the vita screen while the rest of the game is on the tv like normal, so instead of needing to go into the menu and bring it back out you can just look down at your vita like you would if you were holding an actual map.
also i have had some issues charging my laptop (cord is dying) so if that happens it will severely limit my ability to make posts of decent length

Okay I was going to make my own thread but you already had one so.... Here are my thoughts so far:
The menus take a bit to get used to at first. It still has an XMB feel. But it's different. Some menus are more confusing than they should be. After plucking in my my playstation plus information it says you have to go to a certain menu to turn off automatic renewal. Well, I searched for a good 30 minutes and never found the spot to turn off automatic renewal, I just did it on my PS3. But with this, I love that there is a messages area SEPARATE from Friends. And that there is a notifications menu. I did notice a glitch with the menus, if I tried to message people back while in software the keyboard wouldn't come up. Thankfully the PlayStation App on my phone fixes that issue, but they will probably patch it later. I have used the PlayStation App to send messages to friends and to type in my email and etc. I have not had a chance to use it as a 2nd screen yet.
The absolute best part I have found is the fact that Jeremiah and I BOTH can see our own friends and we BOTH show up as online. Considering that we only bought one PS4 and won't be buying a 2nd one for a while, this is much better than PS3. It was so annoying split screening on PS3 and only being able to see player 1s friends. Now with this, It worked for me to have the headset on as player 2 when we were in a party, BUT when we were in CoD Ghosts the game only registered the headset if he had it on. Now onto the Party system like xbox 360, FINALLY SONY FINALLY. I don't like listening to assholes when I am with my clan and now the few of us that got a PS4 don't have to mute them. PLUS I can talk to other people while I play other games. I haven't seen or tried the "spectate" mode they talked about, but haven't really looked.
Friends list, kind of a pain in the butt. Yes, all my friends carried over but I hate that I have to click on them if they are playing a game to see if they are on PS3 or PS4. It should just show next to their name if they're on PS3 or PS4, or maybe pop up a different color IMO. Especially considering I have anywhere from 15-40 friends online at a time because I was almost to PS3 max friends (100). On the PS4 the max friends is 2000 which I think I will never reach.
The headset it comes with kinda really sucks especially since I am used to my Pulse Elites. And it is annoying that we won't be able to use our USB or Bluetooth headsets until Late January according to Customer Service. Now with this the headset, you have to REALLY click it in there to get it to work, And you have to change some settings. I straight up thought my headset didn't work and then I REALLY snapped it in there, almost thought I was gonna break it or the controller it was so hard.
I did originally buy CoD Ghosts on PS3 and spent the $9.99 to get it on PS4 as well, AND WOW. The differences are amazing. PS4 version runs way more smoothly, and it is a graphically better game. Way prettier. The online play is so much smoother. I had a couple instances of Lag but hardly any compared to on PS3. IT could just be that there were only 29,000 people on the game last night and all were from north america. but it was soooooooo nice.
Knack, umm wow. If you have kids start this game on Easy for them. Wait, No. Start this game on easy for yourself. For a "family friendly" game it is FAR too hard. Even some of the reviewers said it was surprisingly hard. They don't give you a manual for the game. You just get the inside of the cover saying what buttons to push. Well its a coop game potentially. Well you get the 2nd controller on and turned on and then press the X button. We found this out by accident. Annoyingly after EVERY cut scene you have to reinsert player 2 into the game. and if Player 1 dies you start back at the beginning of the checkpoint EVEN if player 2 is still alive. If player 2 dies they just respawn.
Battlefield 4 I love it. Didn't try online yet. And didn't go into too much detail with it yet.
Haven't tried killzone or assassin's creed 4 yet.
I almost forgot, the Dualshock 4 is EXTREMELY comfortable. I find it even more comfortable than the Dualshock 3. I love that I won't have to buy real triggers for it. And it is very sensitive on the triggers which is lovely.

Thanks for your impressions Palmer. At least you can see your friends online on their PS3's. On the PS3, I can't see anyone online with their PS4's; I can only see other PS3'ers. I know this becuase when I check the app, there are like 6 more people online at any given time, and it tells me if they are on PS3 or 4. As an example, you show offline on my PS3, but when I check the app, there you are, playing Battlefield 4 campaign in Shanghai lol

A qucik summary of my experience with the ps4 is that everything that was added to the ps3 over the years is now nicely integrated with the system very well, however most of the new stuff is rather rough around the edges.
also you still need to synch trophies, but now it does it while you are viewing them, so you dont need to wait for it to synch before you can check them.

Wow, either this board is too small or interest is lacking because over a week without a post in the PS4 thread seems very odd. Anyway, the European release has finally arrived and my PS4 should be delivered shortly, can't wait to spend the whole day playing games and fiddling with the UI ! .

I only post if there is actual discussion going on. Once that stops I look outside of this forum for discussion. (you'll notice I was the last post here, and am the last post on knack, and only on black flag, thats because if people stop responding I stop posting even if I have new information worth posting)
number 1 thing I love about my PS4 is how seamlessly it switches between games and Netflix. you can have both open at the same time and switch between them effortlessly. I was playing knack for quite a bit, took a break from it to watch some shows on Netflix for a few hours, then I went back. and I didn't even realize I had never even quit the game in the 1st place, not until I went to launch knack, but it just took me back to the pause screen instead. and just like how I can go back to my game just like that I can watch Netflix pause switch back to game play and then go right on back to Netflix right where it was at. in fact one time I was watching a movie with some friends and they would occasionally leave the room and I would pause it go back to killing people in AC4, then between the time it would take for them to go from walking in the room to sitting down id switch back to Netflix and resume the movie.

So far the only 2 people that have a ps4 are nobody and palmer. I wouldn't say interest is lacking more so that only 2 people on the fourms have the ps4 and can really share the hands on experience. I cant really have a personal impression of the ps4 until i get my hands on one.

I just picked up a Vita. I was hoping to wait a bit but with the new LED/LCD screen coming out I wanted to get one with OLED. Anyways the Vita is supposed to really compliment the PS4 Anybody know more about this ? How does it work, can you switch playing a game on PS4 to Vita ? I've heard the Vita will be able to be used like the tablet that comes with the WiiU in certain games too ?
