The EngineerThe Engineer's role is to support the other classes and to defend specific locations. The Engineer accomplishes this by using his Repair Tool and his Turret. Both items can be upgraded twice.
Descriptions of the Engineer's Abilities from Guerrilla Games:Repair Tool (1 unlock point)
Repair damaged or destroyed ammunition dispensers, mounted guns, and automated turrets. Also repair Exoskeletons before they are completely destroyed.
Repair Tool + (2 unlock points)
Increases repair speed, allowing the Engineer to build turrets faster and repair objects more quickly.
Repair Tool ++ (3 unlock points)
Hack enemy placed turrets, transferring ownership. Stacks with previous abilities.
Sentry Turret (1 unlock point)
Deploy a machine gun turret that will automatically target and fire at enemies in range.
Sentry Turret + (2 unlock points)
Deploy your turret twice as fast.
Sentry Turret ++ (3 unlock points)
Deployed turrets can now track targets faster and are augmented with auto-fire rockets that fire every few seconds.
How to use the Engineer's Repair ToolThe Repair tool can be used on broken ammo crates, friendly Sentry Turrets and enemy Sentry Turrets (I have yet to try out the last and will update when I have). Walk up to an item and a little tool symbol should appear along with a prompt to hit :left: (left). If pressed and held, the player will put away his gun and pull out his repair tool. A progression bar appears showing the repair state of the item. Wrench icons appear on the map to show where unrepaired ammo crates are: if the symbol is faint and transparent then the crate is above or below the current level of the player, if it's solid white then it's on the same level.
Players are vulnerable when using the Repair Tool, so it's important to check the surroundings before going ahead with a repair. Repairing items when friendly players are around is encouraged as Turrets can give them a warning for incoming enemy players and they're probably waiting for an ammo resupply.
The Repair Tool also has the ability to increase the rate that a Turret builds when upgraded to Repair Tool +, which comes in very handy when trying to set up a defence around an objective that the enemy is trying to reach.
How to use the Engineer's Sentry TurretThe Sentry Turret can be used for a variety of purposes as the only thing restricting its placement is an unobstructed area big enough for the Turret. If players have played as the Engineer in
Team Fortress 2 they will have a good idea and lots of practice in terms of where to place Turrets. Placing a Turret involves holding down :right: (right) until the progression bar fills. If there is a problem with the location then the game won't allow the placement, such as an "incomplete" floor or a player moving into its placement area. There are some things to keep in mind when placing Turrets:
-
*Be aware of the Turret's range: it is more difficult for the Turret to reach far away targets and may not be able to reach some areas. If placing a Turret in a place where it can see and be seen over large distance is the plan, then it is important to have the Turret pointed in the correct direction. It can turn in 360*, but this takes time and it can mean the difference between a kill and a destroyed turret. The Turret's range isn't good for long distances but for large rooms it handles itself well.
- Make sure the Turret has a lot of time to track: unlike the almost instantaneous death-by-Turret that can be found in
Team Fortress 2, Killzone 3's Turret needs more time to follow the enemy and to kill him. Areas without cover for the enemy are wonderful so finding a spot that allows this is always a priority. If possible, make sure the Turret is in a flanking position so it can surprise the enemy. Give the Turret as much time as possible.
- Keep in mind the map: there are usually several ways for the enemy to enter an area, and ideally the best place to put a Turret is in a spot where all these entrances are covered. Most places allow the player to sit somewhere else and help their Turret get kills while also protecting their Turret.
- Replace destroyed Turrets deployed in a particular position a maximum of one time: once a Turret starts firing and especially if an enemy was killed by one, it will be in the enemy's best interest to destroy it. Replacing it once in the same spot rules out the possibility of a stray explosive or a temporarily uncoordinated team. However, if the Turret is destroyed again, move it. At this point the enemy will expect it to be there, so moving it will throw off the enemy and give the player a slight advantage.
Upgrade the Turret as fast as possible. I found that it was a greater obstacle for enemy players when it was firing rockets instead of just firing bullets.
What needs to have a Turret?Depending on the game mode and what team the player is on, Turret needs and placement vary.
Guerrilla Warfare
Since both teams have the same objective - kill the other team's players - spawning locations, ammo crates and high-traffic areas are ideal locations. Since enemy players can enter a friendly spawning area sometimes it is necessary to protect friendly players long enough for them to get their bearings. A Turret can be placed in an enemy's spawning area but this is not sportsmanlike so beware of the repercussions. Turrets can also provide cover when friendly player resupply on ammo. High-traffic areas will likely yield a large number of kills if in a good position, but the enemy will likely try to destroy it so attending to it is high on an Engineer's list of things to do.
NOTE: Turrets and ammo crates explode and damage their surroundings upon destruction. Keep your distance from them in a firefight and use them to your advantage when available.
Operations
Depending on what team an Engineer is on (attacking or defending), he will need to use different Turret placement strategies. Attacking Engineers will try to cover high-traffic areas in order to keep the enemy team occupied with trying to destroy it rather than protecting the objectives. Defending Engineers will likely try to protect objectives and routes to objectives so that friendly players can reach their objectives unhindered.
Warzone
Since objectives and priorities are always changing, Turret placing changes too. Keep in mind the type of objectives and where they are on the map as this will determine where the Turret needs to go.
Working with other EngineersIf there are other Engineers with their Turrets already placed, covering a different spot is highly recommended. With more Turrets in an area it is more difficult for the enemy to accomplish its task.
*Point requires further testing and possible editing
SUPER AWESOME FACT:
Players can create a Turret as an Engineer and if they die they can switch to another class and the Turret will remain. This means players can do other things and leave a Turret for as long as it's in working order.
