I do have it and am generally enjoying it so far. It's still in the very early stages of beta, so I don't expect too much from it though. I can't really comment on the gameplay and such because it will change quite a lot before release. For example, in a few days there's going to be a large overhaul of the combat stats and how they work, along with a character wipe.
I see a lot of potential in the game. About the most I can say for now.

by far the most disappointing part about this game is the combat. at its core its just not that great or enjoyable, and its not something i really see changing all that much through release.

I think the combat will change significantly as the game goes towards completion, and as we get access to more of it. As it is, it's a little too hard to find things like guns or tech to play with them to see if they're worthwhile, and what they do to change up gameplay. I've only found a tech to let you double jump, but I've seen others including a dash, a morphball al la metroid, and heard about something called a bubble, all of which I'm interested in checking out, but can't find.
I think enemy AI is going to need some work, and that they definitely shouldn't be able to walk through you (and vice versa), and that gun using enemies should be forced to reload or something to slow down their rate of fire so that a melee user could actually get close to them.

im talking about on a more basic level. hitting enemies with a stick isn't very satisfying. in terraria there is a surprising amount of tension hitting monsters with sticks, as they inch ever so close to you after each hit, and you just hop to whittle them away before they get close enough to you.

As it stands, the combat is best described as "1-shot or be 1-shot" on just about any planet beyond the first because getting armor is a lot harder than going to a planet that's way above your weapon/armor level and hoping to find a chest. For example, right now my armor is only good for planets up to level 13 or so, but my weapon was pillaged from a level 21 world. Now, why is this relevant? Because when your weapon/armor are close to the world's level you do have things like knockback on enemies/you, and combat becomes more about out-maneuvering and choosing your ground than about just having the bigger numbers. But when there's a big gap either way you'll just instant kill/die to anything. Fortunately, the world level system is being removed/overhauled, along with the armor penetration mechanic that went along with it. Hopefully this results in a more stable experience.
There are some things that, in my opinion, definitely need to change. Lack of character progression. Like Terraria's Hearts. At present the game has no way to increase your health or energy (used for activating techs). You'll always have a flat 100. Unsure if this is something planned, but from what I gather the armor penetration was supposed to be what handled health. You'd just take less damage the more armor you had. While that should still be the case, there definitely needs to be some way to increase your own stats, not just gear. And speaking of gear, it's currently way too resource expensive to go between tiers of gear. There should definitely be a buy in, but the resources needed to make that buy in are too scarce. You could mine out an entire starting planet and still not get enough silver for a set of armor. Worse, there are branching paths for upgrading through the armor, and each armor requires a previous set as an ingredient. There isn't really any point in this that I can see.

Hello everyone! So I recently started this game a few days ago and I'm pretty addicted, I do have a small hamachi server set up if any of you guys want to get together and go explore. I read the patch notes and what I got from it is that they are going from 100 world levels to 10, and making the tiers of equipment more stable. This will hopefully make the worlds a bit more survivable, also they are completely ditching armor. Harder monsters will just have more health which also means as you get better you can get buffs to your health (I think). So far I am having tons of fun just exploring planets, making houses and finding new creatures. I'm all about exploration and chill times haha

Close. They're removing armor penetration, not armor itself. How it works now is very similar to other games with leveled creatures like Borderlands. In that game, for example, what determines how much of your damage gets through is your character's level compared to the enemy's level. If you and your enemy are the same level you both do full damage to one another. If you are level 10 and the enemy is level 5, then you will do a lot of damage to your enemy, and he won't do hardly any to you. Starbound's system is the same, except that instead of being based on level it's your weapon's Armor Penetration stat vs the monster's level for you to hurt them, and the monster's level vs your Armor level (not sure how it's calculated) for them to hurt you. Not sure how status effect rates figure in, but I know Knockback is also dependent on the above formulas as well, so if something can hurt you it's also likely to throw you quite a ways. Several of my deaths have come from enemies knocking me far away from a cliff I'm on, for example. Had to start making a platform with a wall before engaging unknowns. lol
Rereading the patch notes myself, it seems you're right and they've said that armor will do things like add to your health and provide other buffs, so they are changing how that works too.

The way he worded things does make it a bit complicated but the last sentence of paragraph 6: "We’re also now able to remove armor from monsters and simply give more powerful monsters more health, this way you always know how much damage your weapon will do" Now I dont know if thats ALL monsters or just some, who knows haha. But being able to directly compare weapon dps in the tool tip will make it a lot easier on its own.

The change in armor system wont really have much of an impact on game play itself. Its more so that you can more easily compare weapon stats. There will still be the same gaps as before.

I haven't played too much of starbound yet or terraria so how is the combat different? I'm not sure what else you could do to make it interesting for a sidescrolling game?

The new patch came out, but hit a little speed bump. Crafted weapons do damage in the thousands. This was caused by a bug that they plan to fix very soon, but one that will likely require a character wipe.

Has anyone else purchased the soundtrack to this game? Its 60 songs of really quality stuff. A lot of the songs are over the 4-5 minute mark, the longest being a full 20 minutes

I rarely bother with a game's soundtrack. Prefer to just listen to what plays as I'm playing. I will say that so far it's all really nice.
The first iteration was too sparing with its resources, but the new patch may have been too generous. I'm got large stacks of gold, silver, and platinum and haven't even left the first planet yet. The downside here seems to be that coal is now more scarce, and since wood is no longer a viable fuel, it's pretty much the only early game fuel.
First time I fought the first boss, the UFO, both it and its adds could 1-shot me. Much more balanced this time, but again maybe too much so in the other direction. I had the iron racial gear on and could take several shots from the adds without dying, and they fell over in a couple swipes. Penguin AI is a little too dumb too. Couple of them just decided to stand around because I was over a small rise in the land.
I would have had enough ore to make a suit of Silver or maybe even Gold armor before fighting it, but the game has limited my available crafting recipes. I can only see the basic copper and iron gears at the metalworks station. Assuming I'll have to go to Beta Sector to unlock them, but I haven't tried yet. Still gathering enough coal. Dug down to the bottom of my world while looking for it. Hits lava and just stops. Well, you can actually tunnel out the lava by putting dirt over it and then just digging it out, but eventually you get far enough down that it just stops. Not enough structures on my starting world this time for my tastes, but I did have the one thing I've been looking for. An airship with a gun merchant. Picked out a sniper rifle that's working out quite nicely. Need to try something with a higher RoF though to see how the energy consumption holds up. I can tell you they've increased it for the double jump. Takes about a quarter of a bar instead of one small segment now.

Starbound's future plans. The top comment there is the developer confirming it all. Something to keep in mind is that a lot of this is still a long way off. That being said...

That's the last "quest" at the moment, but in no way the end of the beta. There are several other bosses to fight and oh, so many planets to explore.
Use the console next to your flight controls on your ship to put fuel in your tank. For a long while, Coal is pretty much the only fuel. Unfortunately, it's also used for a lot of other things, so try to limit your travel. It costs a lot to go between star systems and sectors. 200-300. But only 50 to go to other planets in a solar system, and a mere 1 to go between a planet and its moons.
Also, the UFO should have dropped an item. Use that to make a Metalwork station, and use that to make a Starmap MK2. This will let you travel to the next sector. You're currently in Alpha sector, and the next sector is Beta. In the flight control menu where it's showing a planet, right click to back out to a system map, then again to a full starmap. Then go to the right top corner and click the B. That'll set you out into the next sector. You can click Find Random once you're there.
General tips: Horde Iron and Coal like crazy for the next long while. Both are used to make another kind of metal, and then a system later Coal is again used with a different ore to make another different metal. Coal is just spread a bit too thin right now.
Rob everything. You see a container, a crate, a fridge, anything. Open it and look for loot.
