Alright guys so I am exciting for a thing. A very special thing. I have not been this exciting for a thing in a very long time... and as by the title I think you can gather it is called Everquest next: Landmark. This is a PC game for adventurers and builders. Ok so picture thing, a HUGE world that you can run around in and gather resources, all fully MMO, with gear, pvp, farming, etc. Sounds pretty basic right? Well its better than that. For me to explain it here would take forever so Ill just slip this here: So basically there are all these worlds (which you can server hop at will from these crystal things) and explore endless content, and a lot of it will be player made! No world will look different. The worlds are also operating on a "tier" system. Tier 1 being the surface and tier 5 being the hardest to survive, but best resources. The way building works is you can claim plots of land to build your creations on so everyone isn't building willy-nilly, and you are also given literally the same tools the devs are using to create the world. But you know what the best part about this is? This isn't even the final goal they are going for. This whole game is just a tool for creating Everquest Next. They are going to search through all this player made content for inspiration as well as (if its good enough) just use your creations in the actual EQ Next. It looks really promising and I haven't been this excited for an mmo in a long time. I wont even get started on Everquest Next because I've literally watched hours of videos on it but if you are interested I'll leave this video here for you. If you like MMORPG's that I highly recommend watching this.

I have been following this for a bit now. Does look/sound cool. My problem is, is that I don't know if I want to get back in to MMO's again... becoming a founder is quite tempting though!

I have the same mindset. I'm super cautious of playing MMOs nowadays but this sounds promising. Just the fact alone that they are asking us so many questions while building it is very reassuring. Also their AI sounds ridiculous.

So with my early Christmas money I have now purchased my way into the EQNEXT Landmark alpha stage. Alpha is said to be open "Most likely the second half of January" so I'm really stoked on how close it is. When I start playing you guys will be the first ones to get updates from me on how awesome it is

I am ridiculously excited to get my hands on this game, so if you want I can make a video of me logging on for the first time and figuring things out? It would be fun to have other people to play this with.

That would be great actually. It would be cool to see how easy or hard it is to get going.

Well yesterday was the official launch of Alpha! Sadly because of a confidentiality agreement I wont be posting any specific details or videos of it yet. I did stay up till 2am playing and exploring because the world is pretty sweet so far. I imagine things will only get better once people actually start building things in their claims and growing their character. The tools are confusing for me right now but I just found there are tutorial videos that I should go watch. It seems a little confusing to get going but this is pre open alpha, after all. Rediculous amounts of bugs which is hilarious to play with. Once the agreement gets lifted Ill be posting more details and screenshots of the game for sure.

Sounds cool. I look forward to hearing about whatever wacky, buggy hijinks you get up to.

This just in, the restriction has been lifted. Holy crap are there ever bugs. Crashs, textures missing, the game actually picks the wrong graphics card at some points so you have to manually make the correct one the default. I havent play much (Letting some of the biggest bugs run its course) But this is unlike any game ive ever played. I can already see building start to be shaped on the horizons and there are a surprising amount of players. Some of the funniest bugs is when you jump a hill, your character just stays in the jumping motion and just hovers up a steep slope haha but this is first day of alpha, after all. basically the game is set up so you have to gather and explore before you do anything significant in building. Your most powerful building tools actually need to be crafted out of resources and the pickaxe you get is really only good for stone, dirt and copper (there are many more different ores than this and Ive just ran around teir 1). How the world is set up is almost like layers. Teir 1 is the beginner while teir 5 is the lowest, most valuable. I havent had much time so I couldnt explore down there yet but Ill get there. Visually the game looks amazing, even though they have said they are nowhere near where they want to be yet on textures, terrain, etc. I can definitely see the potential of a large fan base for this game and I havent really done much yet haha. As I explore Ill keep you guys updated.

Please do. Sounds a lot like Terraria and Starbound, the latter of which is still in development too. Well, technically Terraria is too, I suppose. Devs just won't stop adding stuff to that game. Definitely not complaining there. lol If you haven't heard of Starbound yet, give it a look. The entire focus of the game is on building and exploration. It's still got a ways to go, but it's off to a wonderful start. Especially with the way they keep adding in mods that get popular with the community to the base game, like the ability to make skyrails like in Bioshock: Infinite. Very cool of them.

Yeah Ive actually owned starbound for awhile now! Lost interest a few weeks ago just because I had no one to play with but it was a brilliant game, I admit. Its such a... satisfying game to play. Very pleasing haha Only thing I didnt particularly enjoy was the fact you had nothing tying yourself down to a planet unless you chose it. I like building myself a nice comfy home with defenses and whatnot but I never got the feeling that "Oh I should upgrade my home a bit to accommodate" because you were just going to out level the world soon anyways and you might as well just pop back to your ship haha Anyways, apparently the devs for landmark fixed some server issues already so im about to explore some tiers.

Definitely hear you on the lack of attachment to planets. Seems like there's no reason to hang around a single area until you hit Sector X. Expect that will change as more things are included like the full quest system, though how exactly it will change I can't say. I do know that upgradable ships are on the way, if not already included in the last patch. Also, they are done with character and ship wipes.

Still very interested in Landmark, and am happy to hear you have started. I look foward to hear about more "whacky bugs" as Monkey put it, and I really want to hear about the improvements over time - bugs, textures, systems changed/removed... if you want to share. That's the stuff I like to hear about. How they make the game better.
Make any vids yet?

I will definitely let you guys know how much things change as we go along. I actually sent my desktop (gaming) computer in for a proper clean install because it was just so incredibly bogged down by 4 or 5 years of use but Ill hopefully be getting it back tomorrow! I tried playing it on my laptop but they havent optimized servers or clients yet so if you run too fast and your computer cant handle loading the textures and such, your character ends up constantly bouncing like a jackrabbit 15 feet in the air until everything loads and its only funny for a few minutes haha. I really havent played any of it yet so once I get my desktop back Ill try and record some stuff for you guys of just figuring things out and whatnot.
Oh one thing I was dissapointed of right now is that even though they have a "Tier" system, as far as I know it doesnt go underground. Basically it just spawns you in a different world with better quality resources. What I thought was tier one was at the surface and tier 5 would be wayyyy underground. My first experiment when I start playing will just be to start mining and see how far down I get since there isnt health or anything at this point and there isnt much to worry about haha
