I had over 150 games on it... I have no idea why but The Last of Us is really hard on my PS3. I was in the UEC part and was having some texture problems, I've since heard that it is not unusual. Anyways I was screwing around there and died.... the screen went black and I had to shut it down badly. Went to the safe mode after I could not get the PS3 to boot up properly. I ended up having to delete everything. Im back to level 1 on Borderlands 2 and lost well over 500 hours of Skyrim....as well as every other game I've played and downloaded in the last year or so.

Well, ND has this habit of making the hardware work so hard their games get kind of laggy and the PS3 will always have its fan on. That seemed to be the case for UC3 in my experience, and I'd assume ND pushed the PS3 harder for TLoU. I've heard of people claiming other games cook PS3s, although nothing has been proven. Sucks to have to reformat the HDD. That's almost as bad as needing to buy a new PS3.

Make sure you have a fan or good air flow going through the back to help out. And see if there any dust in the machine too.

The machine is like new dustwise, but I did move it a bit farther away from the wall. I think it just gets a bit hot with the 90F to 95F degree weather we been having lately. No problems with any other discs whatsoever, just TLOU.

It's a resource hog, no doubt there. Temperature is a factor too. I've being playing low resource games lately as well cause of the heat we're having, and that would only be for an hour.

I've been playing TLOU an hour or so at a time. From what I understand TLOU uses a double layer Blu-ray disc which is harder for the PS3 to utilize. Im almost at the point where everything went to hell at the University of Northern Colorado about 20 miles from my house.. oops I meant the University of Eastern Colorado ... go Rams !!

Old thread, but I just wanted to post this in case anyone else suffers from this issue. You can actually alter the built-in fans, but do so at your own risk. There are countless of youtube tutorials that provide step-by-step instructions. My PS3 started to get really hot when playing The Last Of Us, to a point where I tried to have fans pointed towards it while keeping the PS3 in wide open spaces. No luck though as it started to turn off itself instead. My HDD went bananas too and I had to replace that aswell. Now I'm sitting on a 500 gb (60 gb....oh I hope we never meet again, haha) PS3 that works better then ever before.
