Greetings, fellow Nationites. I know we're all still settling in after the big move, but I'd like to talk about organizing an event.
This is Terraria:
This is Terraria's current price on Steam: $2.49 For less than the price of a bag of chips you can own this game (which is aptly described as "all that and a bag of chips") and help your fellow Nationites build a world and grow the Nation (worth at least two bags of chips, imho). The game is not very demanding of a computer, is very fun, and a great chance to game with friends old, new, and blue.
So, go on. Snap this game up and we can get to talking about just how we want to build our world.
UPDATE: Our server is ready! Respect everyone playing and have fun! If you have any suggestions or requests for the server, I will see what I can do.
The IP for Nationopolis is 96.8.119.194, port 7787
See you there!

personally I say we wait till the new patch, which shouldnt be too far off. probably get a lot more people that have it and played it a bunch before join in at that time as well.
though really no harm in starting now or then. but I probably wont jump in til the patch.

Are we going to be playing on hardcore or casual ? either way im in That's for us all to decide. Personally, I would strongly recommend casual.

While it's true that the setting is per character, I recommend softcore because of the finite nature of resources. Namely, Hearts. There are only so many in a given world. If people go with a hardcore character and keep dying after using them it'll limit everyone else overall eventually. And stars, while not limited, do take a while to gather up large numbers of.
That said, I think there are enough hearts in a large world to get 20 players to max health, so it might not be a thing. I'd love to see that many people around, but I don't expect it. At least not any time soon. Also, I'd generally advise against it since it kinda takes some of the fun out of it (in my opinion), but they could always go heart hunting in other worlds if the main one runs dry.

I have no idea what I'm doing. D: IMO a big part of the fun of the game is discovery, so i dont want to say too much, but 1 thing that will really help you along is talk to the guide, and click crafting (or something like that) and you can drag any item into the box on screen, to find out every item that you can make using whatever you put in the box. you will need a proper place to craft things though. you might need to stand in front of a work bench, or a furnace, or many other types of things. (most are done in those 2 though)

That makes sense to use casual , I forgot the hearts are limited
next question, what are you going to use to all get on the same server ? Last I played you needed a third party software to join other peoples worlds. I used himachi but I remember it being a pain to get everything working

That is a great question. I have no idea. If anyone here has a suggestion, I'm all ears.
Good tips, Nobody. I'll expand on them a little bit to cover some of the less obvious stuff. It's a good game, but it's not beginner friendly.
1. Satisfying various conditions makes people show up. You'll need to build them houses. If a house is missing something, open up your menu with Escape and click on the little House Icon in the top right corner, then click inside the house itself. The game will tell you what you're missing. Once it's complete they will move in. Click on the house icon again to return the cursor to normal.
2. When building a housing unit, don't forget to put a wall in the background. Dirt walls won't work.
3. Use a hammer to pick up things like chests (if they're empty) or workstations you've made and move them to where you want.
4. Hover over anything while holding down Shift to use an applicable tool on an object without having to equip it. For example, holding it over some nearby dirt while you have a pickaxe in your inventory will automatically use it to mine that dirt away. When you release it you'll go back to having whatever you had equipped.
5. There are a couple of hotkeys. H will automatically use any Healing Potions you have in your inventory. Once you have made one (which I'm sure you all saw in the vid up there)the E key will automatically use the grappling hook.
6. Building a bed, placing it in a house, then right clicking on it will set it as your spawn point. Whenever you die or load the game you'll pop up there. Otherwise you just end up in the middle of the world just as when you started the game.
7. Without certain items, there IS falling damage. Watch your step.
That should help out you newbies a little bit without giving too much away. If you have any questions just ask.
NOTE: Terarria has gone off of its big sale and is now back up to the regular summer sale price of $4.99. Still 50% off and a very good deal. The summer sale lasts until July 22, so there's nothing saying it won't back on a larger sale before then either. A good practice for these things is to constantly look to see what's for sale right up until the last day. If you're lucky it'll go big again, but if not you'll still get it cheap on the last day.

Well I'm a little late for the conversation, but between graves, taking my mom in for surgery, and my net being down for 2 days... it was tough! Monkey and I were talking about this on Steam when I got my copy for $2.50. We had talked previously about how I wanted it, and he was saying, Yes, I do want it! haha. So, I picked it up, we got talking more, and he brought up the idea of a Nation world. I was sold right there! I was actually going to make the post, but Monkey realized I was a noob... errr, lazy.... errr hadn't posted yet, and with the sale going on, needed to post soon (This was while I had no internet) The game is a lot of fun, easy to use, easy on the system (as stated), and so very cheap. Once we have a list of all those that have it compiled - nice to see how many have it now - we can figure out more logistics, hosting, etc. PS - I hope you all like the term Nationopolis... personally I think it's an amazing name, and oh so punny!

Do we want to start a whole new character for the new servers , or import our previous ones ?
I'm thinking we will want to have every one start off with a new character so even one is on equal playing grounds, but having some already geared players could be helpful to building things faster and exploring .
what do you guys think ?

I say we do no importing gear. not until equal gear has been found within the world at least (since some things do have limited quantities, like items from the floating islands)

I dont know what I am doing in this game. I was expecting some tutorial but it seems there isnt one. I made my dude, jumped right in, swung my little sword around, and then fell in a dark hole and couldnt see or move. Classic Six gaming right there. Are there settings for the controls, or can a controller be used? I have never been good with wasd movement.

SixHousePull Hey, look! I found a tutorial. That is a great question. I have no idea. If anyone here has a suggestion, I'm all ears. Good tips, Nobody. Otherwise you just end up in the middle of the world just as when you started the game. 7. Without certain items, there IS falling damage. Watch your step. That should help out you newbies a little bit without giving too much away. If you have any questions just ask. Okay, not quite. I can help you out a bit more though. If you want later (and if we can get it to work) I can give you a little tour of my own world to show you what's what. Otherwise, I'll leave these here. Go under the general guideline, "If you see something, then there's something you can do to it." Example, see a tree? You can cut it down with an ax. Why would you do that? To get some wood to build things out of. See the ground? You can dig it up with a pickax and build things out of that too. You'll notice another NPC around your starting area, a Guide. If you talk to him you'll see a Craft option under his dialog box. Click that to see a blue square below it a ways. Now drag any item from your inventory (let's say that wood you got out of the tree) into the box. The guide will tell you what you can make with it. As far as actually making anything, you'll need a crafting station of some kind to make most things. The simplest of these is a Workbench. Make one of those and you'll be able to make all kinds of things like doors, background walls, tables, chairs, etc. Opening your inventory is done by pressing Escape. Press it again to close it. The bottom left of the screen will show the things you can craft depending on what is in your inventory and how close you are to any craft stations that you can use that stuff with. As far as building a structure, it's as easy as selecting a material in your hotbar and clicking where you want it to go (within your character's reach). Want a wooden house? Place wood until you have the shape of house you want. Easy as that. If you want to see in darkness you'll need something to produce light. Torches are the simplest thing. Kill a slime for some gel, combine it with wood. Ta da. Torch. You can also place torches by clicking where you want them. They are permanent and never go out, so don't worry about that. That's as much as I'd prefer to share because I don't want to ruin the experience of discovery. Fortunately, there's plenty more that those very few basics. Controller? I don't think you can, and I'd strongly suggest against it anyway. Adapt and adjust like I very nearly didn't. When I first stared out I was sorely tempted to just get games that you can play with a controller. And there certainly are games that work better with one. But if I'd done that I'd have missed out on a ton of great, cheap games. I haven't been playing PC games that long, and I'm by no means the best at it, but if you just take the time and adjust to it you'll be in a lot better shape for many PC games, Terraria among them. There's no way you'd be able to get the needed precision out of analog sticks. Only keyboard and mouse will do for this. I do recommend fresh characters because it's always better to build from the ground up alongside one another. Otherwise you just end up with the "have nots" standing around and waiting for the "haves" to get them caught up on gear. They don't go about and explore anything for themselves because they have no reason to.

There are some great starting guides in Steam as well. When in game hit shift+tab to open the Steam interface. The top right section is for guides... read and enjoy.
The PS3 version has a tutorial, you could download the demo and try it to learn the basics. It does play best on PC with a mouse and keyboard.
Your guide in game, Daniel... be careful. He can die! I found this out when my acheivement unlocked! Read all that you can from him before going about your work... he may walk of a ledge, be unable to jump back up, and get swarmed by 4 slimes, survive night fall and get eaten by a zombie. Yup, that's my Daniel for you.
My vote is for fresh beginings for all as well.

NOTE: All NPCs are randomly named. Also, in the event they do die they will always spawn again (usually with a new name) a short while later provided the conditions to spawn them are still met. So, no need to worry if Guide McStupid wants to turn himself into zombie chow.
